10 things to do X 2 to get up and running with the Internet, Social Media and stuff.

1.  Get a Gmail account, and explore some of the offerings from Google Namely Google Alerts.  I search for any mention of my name and family members name as well as the company names I own or am interested in.

2.  Get a YouTube account, and upload a video. my first upload was a video titled Bear Swimming

3.  Join some social networking sites, like Linkedin or Facebook try to connect to somebody, I have found people from high school college and even the Boy Scouts.

4.  Learn some of the advanced search features from your favorite search engine, experiment and do not assume you will ever know everything.

5.  Try to find somebody from your past using Google or a social network, that you haven’t communicated with since before the internet.  I personally am looking for somebody I went to school with in the 1st grade. (1976)

6.  Create a Twitter account and do a twit once every 5 minutes for 2 hours. inbetween twits follow somebody else.  I have not personally done this, but when I do I will put key words in my twits because companies and people search twitter looking for specific things.

7.  Register a domain name with GoDaddy and get it hosted somewhere, registered many.

8.  Install Joomla or WordPress at your domain and install an extension or 2. several Joomla sites and 1 wordpress site.  HINT: don’t publish until you proof read it at least twice.

9.  Follow web sites that interest you and try following the site with a RSS reader or using Google Reader.

10.  Do something that challenges your boundaries and write about it.  share it with somebody,  and be good.
